Takayama Chasen “En” Green | Suikaen, Nara
This is the “En” bamboo whisk crafted by Suikaen of Takayama, Nara, the only region in Japan dedicated exclusively to chasen production. The name “En”, meaning connection or bond, reflects the artisan’s wish that meaningful connections spread through a single bowl of tea.
The whisk features an elegant chequered effect created by hand-binding two colours of thread. This subtle decorative detail gives it a warm, contemporary feel while preserving traditional craftsmanship. The green binding offers a calm, refined accent that pairs beautifully with both modern and classic tea settings.
Designed with versatility in mind, this chasen is especially suitable for vessels with narrower openings than standard matcha bowls, such as soup cups or everyday teacups. It is ideal for casual, daily use while still delivering a smooth and satisfying froth.
Takayama chasen have been made using the same techniques for over 500 years. Suikaen whisks are produced without the use of chemical treatments. The bamboo is carefully aged for around two years to remove excess moisture, then shaped entirely by hand. This process results in flexible, resilient tines that are less prone to breaking and comfortable to use.
Each piece is individually crafted, allowing you to experience the quiet beauty and character of authentic Japanese traditional craft.

Care Instructions
Rinse lightly with water before first use, then soak briefly in warm water. Do not use detergent, dishwasher, or dryer. Rinse with water after use and allow to air-dry in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Drying with the whisk facing downward helps maintain its shape. Fine vertical cracks or changes in texture may occur over time and should be appreciated as part of the natural ageing of bamboo.
